Real-time sentiment visualisation

Our web-based visualisation reveals the emotional response to the Olympics in real-time. We track twitter for themes related to the Games, analyse the messages for content and emotional tone, and visualise topics and tone of the conversation. Users are able to explore the ebbs and flows of discus­sions online using a combin­a­tion of two inter­active views, the Topics View and Message Stream View.


Topics View

In topics we see the big picture, which event, athlete or topic is generating the most excitement. Animated geometric objects represent levels of interest around topics which are frequently being mentioned online, and whether the ‘chatter’ around these are positive (orange) or negative (blue). The level of interest is measured over the time span of one minute, and updated every three seconds.

Each topic is represented as a little folded sculpture, representing the amount and tone of the conversation around it.

Origami-like shapes are the central visualization element for topics in emoto. These elements were scaled according to the number of messages captured for a given topic. Each triangle represents one of the 12 sentiment categories ranging from -6 (very negative) to +6 very positive. By hovering the user’s mouse over a triangle the number of messages received in this sentiment category during the last 60-seconds would be revealed.

The development of individual topics can also be tracked over time, to see how individual topics evolved over the days.


Message Stream View
A stream will display the actual content of the social media messages related to the games – an anecdotal, personal and ephemeral take on the Games in the words of people around the world. Important messages are bigger and float more slowly. They are arranged vertically by their emotional tone, with positive messages rising up. Beware: the inverted parallax effect of the floating tweets might just hypnotize you.

In contrast to the ephemeral, real-time web visualization, the collected data will also be preserved in a data sculpture.
